Cat. No. 44

Artist:  Richard Crosse 1742-1810 -  English Portrait Miniature: Gentleman in a Blue Coat, by Richard Crosse, Circa 1760.

A British portrait miniature of a gentleman with brown eyes, wearing a blue coat, white chemise and white lace jabot. The painting is set in a gold locket frame with an engraved bezel and a solid reverse.

Richard Crosse (1742-1810) was born a deaf-mute, the second son to John and Mary Crosse. He took up miniature painting as a hobby, and then pursued it seriously, going to London to study at Shipley’s Drawing School and the Duke of Richmond’s Gallery. He exhibited at the Society of Artists, becoming a member in 1763, the Free Society of Artists, and the Royal Academy, and was appointed Painter in Enamel to George III. His clientele included the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cumberland and the Duke of Gloucester. Crosse painted portraits in oil, and miniatures in watercolor and enamel. Foskett says of him:  He was an outstanding artist &[and] his miniatures are well-modelled and refined.  Examples of his work are at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and many private collections.
