Joseph Daniel and his brother Abraham were two of the most prominent Jewish miniaturists in England. They, along with a third brother, watchmaker Phineas, received instruction from their mother, who was described as an "ingenious woman." Abraham Daniel was based for the most part in Plymouth, though he returned to Bath from time to time, while Joseph practiced in Bath, Bristol and London. Abraham and Joseph set up in opposition to each other, though their styles were similiar. Daphne Foskett says of Abraham: I have seen several miniatures... which were of outstanding merit and would warrant the artist a place among the best eighteenth-century miniaturists.
