Cat. No. 05
Artist: attributed to Andrew Plimer - RARE PORTRAIT MINIATURE with SEPIA MOURNING on BACK (by ANDREW PLIMER - A SUPREME MOURNING MINIATURE SET WITH GOLD & DIAMONDS: A Lady, wearing white dress tied with yellow sash, pearls at the shoulders, her powdered hair worn long and curling and dressed with pearls. Quite exceptional Georgian miniature portrait mounted in a gold frame with blue and white enamel borders set with paste, the reverse with similiar mounted glazed aperture to reveal two classical maidens mourning at urn set with seed pearls and diamonds chips. The plinth enscribed No time/thy Dear/Remem/Brance/ Can/Remove. with blue glass border - extemely rare. The painting is by ‘Andrew Plimer,’ as there is no definitive provenance and with the knowledge that his later period works were unsigned. For the sake of research, I quote from Daphne Fosketts book, page 126: ' Thin cross-hatching in the background to the left and right of the sitter, the long nose, and the treatment of the eyes, are all characteristics of Plimer's work. In his second phase he did not sign his work and is marked by elongated necks, long noses and sameness of appearance.'
